Morning Wire Meditation, July 25 2019
Yesterday’s walk down memory lane reminded me that my wirework shifted pretty dramatically between 2010 and 2013 - aka The Missing Years. My brain tumor was discovered completely by accident in 2012, but based on the typical growth rate for the type of tumor I had, it probably began seriously affecting me around 2010 (at the time, I assumed it was just pregnancy brain and then sleep deprivation) and looking over old photos of my work, I can actually see the wirework slowly getting tighter and denser over the span of those years, with a very abrupt jump to my current default style following the brain surgery. Some of it is just experience and improved precision, some of it is compensating for a hand tremor - but some of it is that there is Before and After. It will be interesting to look back in a few more years - will I remain more or less consistent, or will there be another shift? I’m trying to play with opening the wirework back up, and this piece deliberately uses both long sweeping curves and tight dense curls. It’s a little disconcerting, actually.
